Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a United States National Memorial located in the American state of South Dakota, in the vicinity (35 miles) of Rapid City. It depicts the faces of four former U.S. Presidents (from left to right):

Mount Rushmore

George Washington, first president
Thomas Jefferson, third president
Theodore Roosevelt, twenty-sixth president
Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth president

The four, 60-foot granite faces of Mount Rushmore National Memorial draw more than three million visitors each year, and that’s just for each head!

Mount Rushmore

The first blast on the mountain occurred in 1927. Under the direction of sculptor Gutzon Borglum, 400 workers labored through hot summers and cold winters to create the sculpture, nearly 500 feet up the side of the mountain. More than 90 percent of the mountain was carved using dynamite. The fine details of the faces were achieved with a jackhammer. Operators hung from the top of the mountain in bosun chairs held by steel cables. Despite the dangerous work, during the 14 years of construction, not a single person died. The memorial was officially declared complete on October 31, 1941.

However, Gutzon Borglum’s vision was not totally completed – original plans included head-to-waist depictions of the presidents. When Borglum died suddenly in July 1941, his son, Lincoln, tried to continue his father’s work, but funding ran out as America entered World War II. Visitors wanting to see a model of Borglum’s original dream can view it at the Sculptor’s Studio located at the Memorial.

Another part of Borglum’s grand vision was for a Hall of Records to be carved into the canyon behind the faces. Borglum envisioned a majestic room that held important documents like the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Borglum started blasting the hall, but never finished it.

On August 9, 1998, Borglum’s Hall of Records was somewhat completed when a repository was placed in the floor of the hall entry. Inside a titanium vault are sixteen porcelain enamel panels inscribed with the story of Mount Rushmore, the reasons for selecting the four presidents and a short history of the United States. The Hall of Records is not accessible to visitors, but is left as a record for people thousands of years from now.

Beautiful Paper Sculptures by Jeff Nishinaka

The stunning elegance of Jeff Nishinaka’s paper art calls for a new definition of paper. His meticulous sculptural 3D work appears to have been created from marble or extremely fine sand or vanilla ice cream or thick foam — definitely of something other than “just” paper. The Los Angeles-born artist works mainly with white, which makes the exquisite play of light and shadow a large part of the appeal of his work. One might assume that there is very little demand for work that uses one medium and one color. Not so. Nishinaka’s work pops up everywhere in the most unexpected places, from medical illustrations of the structure of the eye, to private portrait commissions, to a life-size garden for a hotel.

Global Warming Threatens

How rising temperatures and melting ice have affected the habitats of five species of the swimming birds

The Emperor Penguin

The Emperor, the largest and most recognizable of the penguin species, is thought to be the most vulnerable of all life in Antarctica. According to the World Wildlife Federation, the overall rise in temperatures is melting sea ice and dramatically reducing the scope of the penguins habitat.

Frosty Chicks

The male Emperor Penguin famously guards the egg on its feet in blizzards and temperatures as low as -49c until it hatches. A 2009 report of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences argues that the early break-up of the winter sea ice that supports the colony may contribute to low breeding success.

Sharing the Warmth

The Emperors huddle together to protect themselves from the extreme cold of Antarctica. Scientists warn that global warming could put the magnificent birds at the risk of extinction by the end of the next century.

River in the Ice

Because they have less foraging capability than Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins, the Adélie are shrinking at a greater rate than the other penguin species.

Colony

Adélie Penguins require dry land for breeding grounds and stone pebbles for creating nests, but their greater survival depends on the presence of sea ice.

King Penguin

There are currently 2 million pairs of breeding King Penguins on the islands north of Antarctica. Research suggests that the population is declining as sea temperatures warm and the birds are forced to travel longer distances to find food.

Chinstrap Penguin

The warming temperatures have been temporarily beneficial for Chinstrap penguins, which breed and nest on land with no ice or snow.

Out for a Swim

Much like the larger Emperors, King Penguins rely on Krill and small crustaceans for food, but an increase in surface ocean temperatures is reducing the supply in the winter months.

Devastating Tornado Pictures

A tornado is a violent, dangerous, rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cloud. Tornadoes come in many shapes and sizes, but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris and dust. Most tornadoes have wind speeds less than 110 miles per hour (177 km/h), are approximately 250 feet (80 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. The most extreme can attain wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than two miles (3 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km). With this speed, tornadoes, destroy everything which is found of their way. As you can see, the tornado is a very nasty natural disaster, but, there are people, who catch tornadoes, and enjoy taking images of them.
